I haven't done one of these in a while, though I think about it every year. After a weird and crazy year that was 2014, I figured I would update this entry, and maybe throw in some stuff from the prior years.

08:08 pm - Zelda II Nintendo Power Memories
ARHGGRGHH! This is why it has taken me so long to get around to doing this. Word of advice, if you have something extremely long to type out, DO NOT start it on facebook. Open a text document and do it there. Save it, THEN post to facebook. It shouldn't get deleted by accident then, like what just happened to me!
Okay, so this is the "long awaited" Zelda II Nintendo Power story. It is sort of a two-parter, but really it's more of a long story. It should be fun, I promise.
As you can see here, this is the March/April 1989 issue of Nintendo Power, with its Ninja Gaiden cover long gone. This was not always the case of course, and I remember when it was pristine condition (it hurts me to think that I ruined this awesome mag). More on this later.
All right, so the year was approximately 1995. For years, I had been trying to beat Zelda II. My brother had done so many years prior, and I knew I would have to do the same.
Up until the point I was at in the game, I had found most everything that you needed to find. This was through hard playing, the Zelda II issue of Nintendo Power, and previously watching my brother/him telling me tips about the game.
There was still one more item I needed to find though before I could progress further: the last Magic Container. I searched EVERYWHERE (or so I thought) in the game for that thing. I double, triple, quadruple checked the Zelda II NP issue. Nothing. I asked my brother where it was, but he didn't seem to remember by that point.
I can't remember exactly what the game prevents you from doing without all the Magic Containers, but I believe you need all of them in order to get one of the last spells. Which was it? I think either Reflect or Magic, and I am leaning towards the latter, as I may just be confusing getting the Reflect spell with not being able to defeat the boss of Level 4 (whatever his name is) without it. I know that without beating all the bosses, you can't access the Great Palace. It may be that, without Magic, I couldn't get past Thunderbird in the Great Palace.
ANYWAY, so I knew that I needed that stupid Magic Container. How was I going to find it? I figured I had exhausted all my other options, maybe the game was glitched or something. It was around this time though that I was starting to get back into new issues of Nintendo Power, realizing their potential for video game greatness. Looking back at the old issues my brother had from his subscription, we still had the issues of Castlevania II, Zelda II, Track & Field...II, and TMNT (not II). I had never recalled seeing the first issue of Super Mario Bros. II, I mean II (though my brother recently admitted he left it at a neighbor's house, who moved away in 1994), nor the Mega Man II (another II!) issue, but I KNEW that Ninja Gaiden issue just had to be around somewhere. I figured it would hold the answer I desperately needed. (BTW, I just replaced the Castlevania II and even the Mega Man II issues with some eBay wins! I NEARLY replaced the Zelda II issue, but I got outbid when I wasn't paying attention. ARGH).
So it was house hunting time, in a manner similar to how I went looking for all my Nintendo Power issues these past couple months with the release of the final ever issue (can't wait for the next Nintendo Force issue!)
Staring at the madness that was my room, I opened the doors to the dark abyss of my closet. Below was a mess of boxes and papers that I was afraid to move because the cat had peed on them before (I don't know how I lived with that for so long...I didn't fully clean that out until 2006:
Then I looked up. My 4'10" self probably got a chair for this, but I saw some stacks of paper and stuff sitting on a shelf up top. It HAS to be up there!
Sure enough, I pulled down the stuff up there and found the Ninja Gaiden issue of Nintendo Power, looking like it had barely ever been read in its lifetime (and me thinking, "YES! I FOUND IT!"). This really was the holy grail for me at the time. The fact that it had been hiding for so long, in great condition, then exposed to me and eventually partially destroyed makes me think the magazine just didn't want me to ever find it. At the same time as I finding this, I thought I would also perhaps find the first issue, or even the Mega Man II issue, but neither were there. This really was not of concern when I opened the mag straight to the Zelda II section.
THERE IT IS! The Magic container is at the west end of Maze Island! (In the years prior to this, I pronounced the word as "is land". Chuckle.) It didn't take me long to plop down, find that last Magic Container, get the last spell, then go on to FINALLY beat Zelda II: Adventure of Link. A great "thank you" and a deft of gratitude is owed by me for Nintendo Power for not only allowing me to find a treasure and beat this great game (the "dark horse" that people claim), but to also find a treasure in the real word that I thought was gone forever.

It's already 2011 somehow, so I guess I'll update this thing once again, looking at what happened on a dreadful year. This time around, we'll take a look at 2010, a year with still no flying cars!
